What Are GPT-4o Tokens? How Usage and Limits Work

8 min read

Tokens are the units AI models use to measure input and output. When you send a message or get a reply, you use tokens. This article explains what tokens are, what uses more of them, and how Get4oBack's monthly allowance works.

What is a token?

Roughly, a token is a piece of text - often a word or part of a word. So a short message might be 20 tokens, a long paragraph 200. The model counts every token you send (your messages, system context, attachments) and every token it returns. That total is what chat apps use to apply your monthly allowance.

What uses more tokens?

Long messages, long replies, and large file uploads use more tokens. Many short back-and-forth messages add up. So your allowance can go further with focused conversations or run down faster with very long threads and big documents. Get4oBack shows your usage (Plus and Pro dashboard) so you can see how you are doing.

Monthly allowance in Get4oBack

Each plan has a monthly token cap (e.g. 20k free, 900k Plus, 1.8M Pro). When you hit it, you wait for the next reset or upgrade. No overages - you know the max. The exact numbers are on the pricing page; the idea is the same across plans.

How to use fewer tokens

Shorter messages and asking for concise replies use fewer tokens. Starting a new chat when the thread gets very long can help - old context adds up. Avoid pasting huge documents if a summary or excerpt is enough. On Plus and Pro, the usage dashboard shows how much you have left so you can adjust. Custom instructions that ask for brief answers can reduce output tokens. For heavy use, upgrading to a higher plan gives you more headroom.

Tokens vs words

There is no fixed rule (e.g. "1 token = 1 word") because it depends on language and wording. In English, one token is often about four characters or roughly three-quarters of a word. So 100 words might be around 130-150 tokens. Code and technical text can be more token-heavy. The important idea: every character you send and every character the model returns counts. Get4oBack applies the model's tokenizer so your allowance is calculated correctly; you do not need to count by hand.

Summary

Tokens measure input and output. Get4oBack gives you a monthly token allowance per plan. Shorter messages and concise replies use fewer tokens; long chats and files use more. Use the dashboard to stay on track.
